One of the leaders I am working with is interested in learning how his performance has improved over the last two years. His business has experienced significant growth in terms of revenue, people and facilities.

His interest is in looking at objective measures around behaviors. He realizes that the right leadership behaviors are critical to leading his team effectively. We decided to use the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. This 360-degree assessment is based on five practices of leadership. Research has shown that these five practices drive exemplary leadership.

Practice 1: Model the Way

In order to gain the commitment and respect of team members, leaders need to model the behavior they expect of others. That’s why it is so important for leaders to identify and articulate their core values to their team members. The example the leader sets makes it easier for team members to share those same values.

Practice 2: Inspire a Shared Vision

Leaders envision the future and create a picture of what the organization will look like and feel like in the future. They are able to bring that future to team members in a way that they understand how their contribution shapes the future. When team members catch the vision, they can then own it. This strengthens the vision and, by that, strengthens the whole organization.

Practice 3: Challenge the Process

Leaders look for ways to do things better. They are always looking at how the processes, interactions and communications can be improved. The way they do this is important. It is important for a leader to encourage the team to look for new ways to get things done. Innovation and experimentation should be encouraged. Mistakes will be made along the way. It is important that they are used as learning opportunities.

Practice 4: Enable Others to Act

It is important for leaders to foster collaboration. Developing collaborative relationships happens in an atmosphere of trust. Leaders need to empower team members and ensure that they have the tools and authority they need to accomplish their goals.

Practice 5: Encourage the Heart

People like to be acknowledged for the work they do. Leaders who celebrate the accomplishments of team members and encourage them often get their best work. It’s important for team members to know that their leader cares and appreciates their work and dedication.

It’s not enough for leaders to follow these five practices. In the coming weeks we will discuss the behaviors that support the practices and must be demonstrated.

Share Your Thoughts: As you think about these five practices, which ones do you think you do best? Which ones do you think you need to work on or improve?
